Hypothesis

If we use diffusion then the egg will get bigger because when the temperature is hot the water enters the cell membrane. If we use osmosis the egg will get smaller because the temperature is cold so the water leaves the cell membrane. (Our experiment had nothing to do with temperature. We do not use osmosis and diffusion, we demonstrated that they occur.)

Materials

We used Corn syrup, Vinegar, Table salt, 4 eggs, Water, A scale, 3 beakers and 3 different food colouring colours.

Procedure

  • 1st we put the eggs in vinegar for 3 days.
  • 2nd we put Egg A in corn syrup, Egg B in regular water, Egg C in hot water
  • 3rd we switch the eggs 2 more times in each solution.
  • 4th thing we did was dissect the eggs by poking them with a knife then it exploded.

Observations

We removed the Egg A from the Corn Syrup it didn't have a shell. It had a mass of 96G. It appeared larger than a regular egg which has a mass of 65G.
  • Egg A: 1st mass 89G, 2nd mass 39G, 3rd mass 86G. Egg A was 3G's smaller than it's original mass.
  • Egg B: 1st mass 90G, 2nd mass 94G, 3rd mass 94G. Egg B was was 4G's bigger than its original mass.
  • Egg C: 1st mass 97G, 2nd mass 98G, 3rd mass 74G. Egg C was 23G's smaller than its original mass.

Conclusion

In hyper-tonic solution the eggs shrunk and the water left the cell membrane. When it was in the hyper-tonic solution the cells focused in the egg. In hypo-tonic the the water entered the cell membrane and grew bigger. When it was in hypo-tonic solution the cells were everywhere.

Relevance

We need osmosis because it helps purify our water so we don't always have salt water. Without osmosis we wouldn't be able to drink water to keep hydrated. We wouldn't have animals, people or anything only plants. In other words we would all be dead.
